Rev. Jennifer Butler founded Faith in Democracy (Fid) in December 2023 after founding and leading Faith in Public Life (FPL) from 2005 to 2023. Before founding FPL, Butler spent ten years organizing globally to address gender equality, the AIDS pandemic, children’s rights, and peace in the Middle East as the Presbyterian Church (USA) representative to the UN. Rev. Butler’s book Born Again: The Christian Right Globalized was the first to document the rise of a transnational religious right movement that could undermine democracy and human rights. She served as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer in a Mayan village in Belize from 1989-1991.

Sarah Clark, Board Chair, is an international expert on leadership and organizational development. She currently serves as a Senior Associate at the Institute for Conservation Leadership and has extensive experience heading national and global leadership development initiatives with Amnesty International and Habitat for Humanity International. She currently serves as the Treasurer of the Torture Abolition and Survivors Support Coalition (TASSC) board. She has an MS in Organization Development from American University and a BA in Sociology from Miami University.
Meg Riley, Board Vice Chair
Since 1983, Meg Riley has served Unitarian Universalist congregations, organizations, and enterprises in many capacities, including director of the Unitarian Universalist Association's (UUA’s) Youth Office, GLBT Office, Washington Office, and Advocacy and Witness Staff Group. She led efforts to counter Christian right activism in these positions, including the ground-breaking Standing on the Side of Love (since re-named Side with Love) campaign. Riley is currently the Co-Moderator of the UUA denomination, chairing the board and facilitating the national meetings (General Assemblies). Riley has also served on numerous boards, including the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Justice, the Interfaith Alliance, Equal Partners in Faith, and Faith in Public Life. Riley has worked to transform the UUA into a multiracial, justice-centered religious movement. Meg lives in Minneapolis, MN. She is married to Dr. Nancy Hammond, who recently retired after 37 years as a clinical psychologist, and is the proud parent of Jie Wronski-Riley, 27.
Rory Anderson is the Senior Policy Advisor for Africa in the Strategic Religious Engagement Unit within the Office of International Religious Freedom at the U.S. Department of State. Before joining the State Department, from 2011 – 2014, Rory served as Director of External Relations for ChildFund International, an international child development nonprofit operational in over 30 countries, where she led their global advocacy, government relations, and public relations work. Between 2000 and 2010, Rory was the Deputy Director for Advocacy and Government Relations and Senior Policy Advisor for Africa at World Vision, a global development organization operating in 98 countries. During her tenure at World Vision, Rory led the multi-agency effort enacting the 2010 Dodd-Frank Congo Conflict Minerals, legislation that stems the trade in minerals funding conflict in parts of central and eastern Africa. In addition, Rory initiated and co-chaired the civil society and business coalition that spawned the advocacy campaign to end the trade in conflict diamonds. As part of those efforts, Rory was a lead public spokesperson, including giving Senate and House testimonies and leading in drafting the Clean Diamond Trade Act of 2003 and the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme, which regulates the international diamond trade. Rory is proficient in French and holds a Bachelor’s degree in International Affairs from George Washington University. Rory was a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar to the United Kingdom, earning a Master of Arts in International Development from the University of Leeds.
